1. Choose comfortable, camera-friendly clothes.
Pick an outfit that your child feels good in. Avoid distracting logos or busy patterns—solid colors or soft, simple prints photograph beautifully. Comfort matters! A child who’s fidgeting with stiff clothes won’t be able to focus on smiling. Remember to dress from head to toe as some images are full body captures.
2. Keep hairstyles simple and away from the face.
Hair in the eyes or too many accessories can hide that adorable expression. A neat hairstyle helps make sure their face is the star of the show. Consider the hairstyle if your little one will be wearing a cap and gown! Updo’s make it hard for the graduation cap to set correctly.
3. Leave the Character.
Don’t be too set on “perfection” A little character is enduring and tells the story of who they are right now!.
4. Talk about picture day ahead of time.
Let your child know someone will be taking their picture and it’ll be fun! A little prep can ease anxiety and make them feel excited instead of shy. Don’t practice too hard on the smile or it will be forced and fake.
5. School Day as usual even if it’s not.
If you are bringing up your child for picture day, pretend you are dropping them off like any other day. Let the teacher bring your baby to get their portrait. Kids tend to do better when their parents aren’t there… trust me on this one! If they still aren’t having it, we will definitely call you in for help.
6. Stranger Danger.
The sweet spot of stranger danger is about 18 months to 2 years old… give or take. You can read about it here. If possible, send a few tips of what your child likes to the teacher or photographer so they can help them feel comfortable with me, the stranger! Their favorite song, or TV character, or even their favorite stuffed animal comes along for the ride. .
Why these tips matter:
Preschool portraits capture a fleeting chapter in your child’s life. Following a few thoughtful steps can help your little one feel confident and happy, which shows in their final photo. These portraits become keepsakes for years to come—shared with grandparents, displayed at home, and treasured in albums. With just a little prep, you’ll help your child look and feel their best—and those sweet smiles will shine through every frame.
