Annual Photography Session Capturing a Family Tradition: Golden Hour Portraits at Boy Scout Hill
Some portraits tell a story. Others become a tradition. For one of my dearest clients, their annual photography session is both. Every year, she and her husband commemorate their only son’s growth, capturing the same beloved pose — both parents kissing him on each cheek. It’s a moment full of love, giggles, and the kind of timeless connection that family portraits are made for.

This year’s annual photography session took us to Boy Scout Hill at White Rock Lake, a picturesque gem in Dallas, TX. We chased the Texas spring weather for weeks, rescheduling until we finally landed the perfect golden hour. The reward? A breathtaking sunset filtered through a darker strip of clouds — the kind of dramatic backdrop you can only get from unpredictable Texas skies. As you can see from the session, the start of the session was a soft pastel natural light, then the sun peaked from behind the thick cloud and magic happened as the session progressed!

The field was alive with white wildflowers — yarrow (also called milfoil), their delicate clusters of tiny white and a few scattered pale pink blooms swaying in the breeze. With tall, fern-like stems, yarrow adds a whimsical charm to their annual photography session. But nature comes with its own caution: a toxic lookalike, water hemlock, has been spotted around White Rock Lake this season. Public Service Announcement: Always keep safety in mind when photographing in natural spaces! As well as a Fun Fact!: Native Americans once made tea from yarrow leaves to soothe stomach troubles — a little piece of history woven into our modern-day session.

Now back to their session 🙂 Their son, as always, settled right into the environment — no stranger to playing in the grass, the glow of sunlight teasing his hair. Every time he brings a little extra personality to his annual photography session, and this time, it was his signature move: the “Om” pose. “Om” (or “Aum”) is the primordial sound of the universe — and somehow, in that serene moment, it felt like the perfect expression of his calm, joyful spirit.

These annual photography session portraits aren’t just photographs; they’re a growing collection of memories, a visual diary of love, change, and the joy of watching a child grow.
