Dallas Christmas Family Portraits: When Rain Changes the Plan

Family portrait sessions don’t always go according to plan—and sometimes that makes them even better.

This Dallas family originally planned an outdoor portrait session, but Texas weather had other ideas. When rain washed out our plans, we moved the celebration indoors to The Lumen Room in Dallas, Texas, turning a rainy-day backup plan into a fun, Christmas-themed family portrait session filled with personality, laughter, and just the right amount of holiday chaos.

With two boys—one elementary-age and one very energetic toddler—sitting quietly and smiling at the camera was rarely going to be the goal. And really, why should it be?

Christmas Portraits with a High-Energy Toddler

We let him move!

Toddlers are busy, curious little people, and forcing them to sit perfectly for every photograph usually isn’t the recipe for authentic family portraits. Instead, we worked with his energy and found ways to make the session entertaining for both boys.

At one point, we jokingly wrapped the kids in Christmas lights. Finally—a way to get the toddler to sit still!

The result was a playful Christmas portrait that captured much more than two children looking at a camera. It captured this particular season of their family life: a big brother, a little brother with places to go, and parents embracing all the wonderful chaos that comes with raising boys.

A Little Christmas Cheer for Mom and Dad

Their parents work in the hospitality industry, so they know a thing or two about creating a good time—and appreciating a glass of wine at the end of a long day.

Between careers, two boys, holiday schedules, unpredictable weather and everyday family life, sometimes a little extra wine is simply part of the Christmas spirit!

Rather than trying to create a picture-perfect version of family life, these Dallas Christmas family portraits celebrated the family they actually are. There was movement. There was laughter. There were Christmas lights. There was chaos.

And there were beautiful portraits in between it all.

Indoor Family Portraits in Dallas When Texas Weather Won’t Cooperate

One of the advantages of working with an experienced Dallas family portrait photographer is knowing how to pivot when circumstances change. Rain doesn’t have to mean losing the opportunity to create meaningful family photographs.

Moving our session to The Lumen Room in Dallas gave us an indoor setting where we could embrace a completely different vision. Instead of worrying about wet grass, muddy shoes and storm clouds, we leaned into Christmas and created a cozy holiday atmosphere.

That’s the thing about family photography: the photographs don’t need everything surrounding them to be perfect. Your kids don’t have to behave perfectly. The weather doesn’t have to cooperate. Your toddler doesn’t have to sit still.

Your family simply needs to show up as themselves.

Christmas Family Photography That Feels Like Your Family

Some of my favorite Dallas family photography sessions are the ones that leave room for children’s personalities to take over.

Of course, we want the classic family portrait where everyone is together. But the photographs parents often treasure most are the ones that remind them exactly who their children were at that age—the expressions, silliness, energy and relationships that can’t be recreated five years from now.

That’s especially true with toddler portraits and children’s photography. Childhood changes unbelievably quickly. Today’s little boy who refuses to sit still will eventually become the older child who actually follows directions. Those chaotic moments that feel exhausting now become part of the family story.

Wine for the Parents, Christmas Cocoa for the Kids

Of course, if Mom and Dad were going to enjoy a little wine during their Christmas portrait session, Mom wanted the boys to have a holiday treat of their own. We finished the session with Christmas hot cocoa topped with plenty of whipped cream—and that turned out to be exactly what our energetic toddler needed.

The whipped cream brought out some wonderful smiles…and perhaps made him even sillier! Instead of fighting that extra burst of personality, we photographed it. Sticky smiles, whipped cream and all, these playful Christmas portraits of the kids captured the kind of genuine childhood moments that make holiday family photography so much fun. Sometimes the best way to get a toddler to smile for pictures isn’t asking him to smile at all—it’s giving him whipped cream!

So bring on the rain.

Bring on the rambunctious toddler.

Bring on big brother.

Bring on the Christmas lights.

And maybe bring a little wine and hot cocoa for later!
